The Evolution series represents Bryant's premium tier. These are modulating furnaces that can adjust heat output in 1% increments, running anywhere from 40% to 100% capacity. They pair with variable-speed blowers and two-stage gas valves. AFUE ratings hit 98% on some models, which matters when you're heating a home through January in Rochester Hills.
The Preferred series sits in the mid-range. Most are two-stage furnaces with AFUE ratings between 80% and 96%. These are the workhorses we see most often during furnace installation and repair calls across Metro Detroit.
The Legacy line covers Bryant's single-stage furnaces. AFUE ratings run 80% to 95%. These are straightforward systems: on or off, no modulation. Parts are widely available, and they're relatively simple to diagnose and repair.
One thing that sets Bryant apart: their control boards and ignition systems are proprietary to the Carrier/Bryant ecosystem. That means generic replacement parts won't work. You need OEM components, and you need a tech who knows how to program and calibrate them correctly.
Bryant also uses a specific pressure switch configuration on their condensing furnaces. The switches monitor draft pressure to ensure safe combustion and proper venting. When these fail in Michigan's cold weather, the furnace locks out. We'll cover that in detail below.

Ignition System Failures
Bryant furnaces use hot surface ignitors (HSI) on most models built after 2010. These are ceramic elements that glow orange-hot to ignite the gas. They're fragile. Oil from your fingers during installation can create a weak spot that cracks under thermal stress.
Symptoms: Furnace tries to start, you hear the draft inducer motor spin up, but no heat. The ignitor might glow for 30 seconds, then the system shuts down and tries again. After three attempts, the control board locks out.
We replace dozens of these every winter. The part itself costs $40 to $80. Labor adds another $150 to $200. Total repair: $200 to $280. It's a straightforward fix if you catch it early, but if you ignore it and force the furnace to keep trying, you can damage the control board.
Pressure Switch Issues
This is the big one for Bryant condensing furnaces (90%+ AFUE models). The pressure switch monitors the draft inducer motor to confirm it's pulling enough air through the heat exchanger before allowing the gas valve to open. Michigan's cold weather and condensation buildup cause these to fail more often than in warmer climates.
Symptoms: Furnace starts the draft inducer, but you hear clicking and the system never moves to ignition. Or the furnace runs for a few minutes, then shuts down mid-cycle. The LED diagnostic light on the control board flashes a pressure switch error code.
Sometimes it's the switch itself. More often, it's a clogged drain line or condensate trap. When condensation freezes in the drain, pressure builds up and the switch trips. Blower Motor Problems
Bryant variable-speed and multi-speed blower motors run constantly during heating season. They're reliable, but bearings wear out. When they do, you'll hear squealing or grinding. Ignoring it leads to motor seizure and no airflow.
Another issue: capacitor failure. The capacitor gives the motor the electrical boost it needs to start. When it fails, the motor hums but won't spin. You'll get heat at the furnace but no airflow through the vents.

Heat Exchanger Cracks
This is the worst-case scenario. The heat exchanger is the metal chamber where combustion happens. Exhaust gases travel through it while your home's air blows across the outside. When cracks develop, carbon monoxide can leak into your airflow.

What Happens During a Bryant Furnace Repair Call

Step five: Test the ignition sequence. We watch the furnace go through its startup cycle. Draft inducer runs for 30 seconds, pressure switch closes, ignitor glows, gas valve opens, flame lights, blower kicks on after a delay. If any step fails, we know where the problem is.
Step six: Inspect the heat exchanger. We use a flashlight and inspection mirror to look for cracks, rust, or corrosion. On high-efficiency models, we check the secondary heat exchanger for blockages. This is critical for safety.
Step seven: Measure airflow and temperature rise. We check static pressure in the ductwork and measure the temperature difference between return air and supply air. Bryant furnaces have specific temperature rise specs (usually 40°F to 70°F depending on the model). If it's outside that range, there's an airflow problem.

When to Repair vs. Replace Your Bryant Furnace
This is the hardest decision for homeowners. You're facing a $600 repair on a 15-year-old furnace. Do you fix it or replace it?
We use the 50% rule: If the repair cost is more than 50% of the replacement cost and your furnace is past the midpoint of its expected lifespan, replacement makes more financial sense.
Bryant furnaces last 15 to 20 years on average in Michigan. Lifespan depends on maintenance, how hard the system works (oversized furnaces cycle more and wear out faster), and whether you change filters regularly.
If your furnace is under 10 years old and the repair is under $1,000, fix it. You'll likely get another 5 to 10 years out of it.
If your furnace is over 15 years old and you're facing a $1,000+ repair, consider replacement. Here's why: older furnaces run at 80% AFUE or lower. New Bryant furnaces hit 95% to 98% AFUE. That's a significant efficiency gain. On a 1,800-square-foot home in Troy, upgrading from an 80% AFUE furnace to a 96% AFUE model saves $300 to $500 per year in gas costs.
Another factor: repair frequency. If you've had two or three repairs in the past two years, that's a pattern. The furnace is wearing out. Continuing to patch it together gets expensive fast.
Control board failures on furnaces over 15 years old are a red flag. If the board dies once, other components are likely near the end of their life too. You might spend $800 on a control board this year, then $600 on a blower motor next year, then $400 on a gas valve the year after. At that point, you've spent $1,800 in repairs on an old furnace when you could have put that money toward a new system with a 10-year parts warranty.
Heat exchanger cracks are an automatic replace decision. The repair cost is so high that it makes no sense to put a $2,000 heat exchanger in a 15-year-old furnace. You're better off spending that money on a new system.
One exception: if your Bryant furnace is 8 to 10 years old and the heat exchanger cracks, check the warranty. Bryant offers a 10-year heat exchanger warranty on most models. If it's covered, you only pay labor ($500 to $800). At that point, the repair makes sense.

How to Prevent Bryant Furnace Breakdowns
Most Bryant furnace repairs are preventable. Here's what we tell every homeowner in Macomb and Oakland counties.
Change your filter every 30 to 60 days during heating season. This is the single most important thing you can do. A dirty filter restricts airflow, causes the furnace to overheat, and trips the high-limit switch. Over time, it cracks the heat exchanger. Use a standard 1-inch pleated filter with a MERV rating of 8 to 11. Don't use the cheap fiberglass filters. Don't use MERV 13+ filters unless your system was designed for it. High-MERV filters restrict airflow on standard residential systems.
Schedule annual maintenance before heating season. We recommend a fall tune-up in September or October. During a tune-up, we clean the flame sensor, test the ignitor, check the pressure switch, inspect the heat exchanger, measure gas pressure, test safety switches, and verify proper airflow. Keep the area around your furnace clear. Don't store boxes, paint cans, or cleaning supplies near the furnace. The furnace needs adequate combustion air. Blocking airflow causes incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide production.

Clear snow and ice from exhaust vents. Bryant high-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipes on the side of your house. Heavy snow or ice can block the vent and cause the furnace to shut down on a pressure switch error. After a big storm, check the vents and clear any obstructions.
Test your carbon monoxide detector. Every home with a gas furnace should have a working CO detector. Test it monthly. Replace the batteries annually. If it goes off, leave the house immediately and call 911. Then call us to inspect the furnace before you turn it back on.
